This is an interesting take that I can relate to. I have been an ABC (anything but chardonnay) white wine guy for many years. Then I took your advice and tried Chards from other parts of the world. They were outstanding. The big, oaky, over-priced California Chards ruined the brand for me and many other wine drinkers.
