The FAA government bureaucracy and the airlines, not the weather, are to blame.

I recall flying out of Jackson, Wyoming, many years ago on a small aircraft in a blinding snowstorm. The visibility was zero. That was bad weather. Fast forward to today, and the mere threat of a rainstorm is enough to wreak havoc on flight schedules, particularly in the Northeast.

Airlines bear the brunt of the public outrage and blame as they are the most visible culprit in this recurring travel fiasco. However, digging deeper, the federal government should also take responsibility. Judging by the comments of the Secretary of Transportation, don’t expect honesty here.

The FAA Mess

United States Secretary of Transportation (“Mayor Pete”) Buttigieg says the federal government and his department are not to blame. Perhaps he should read his own department’s inspector general’s report. It is summarized in a recent editorial in the Wall Street Journal and is informative and shocking, but for anyone who knows anything about the federal bureaucracy not surprising.
