I remember this evening well. (I say evening because I live in the eastern time zone.) My best friend and I were shooting hoops in a sports bar where a TV showed an image of Al Michaels shaking. My second wife and I were to be married in two days and then honeymoon in SF and Sonoma. I briefly considered canceling travel plans but fortunately decided we would go anyway. What I found was nothing like the news portrayed. Most businesses were unaffected and begging for patrons. We walked into top restaurants with no reservations and encountered few crowds. The news showed the SAME images over and over again of one fire in the marina district and the damaged bridge. You would have thought the entire city fell into the ocean. That was my first lesson not to trust what you see on the news.
